Keeping Your Poodle Healthy

Whatever size of poodle you opt for, you need to bear in mind that these dogs are quite high maintenance and prevention can be a lot better than cure.

Basic Care

Poodles are generally healthy, but they do need the usual care which include a good balanced diet including fresh protein, annual vet checkups, checking for worms and parasites and vaccinations. You should also microchip your dog, especially if you take them out on hunts as they might get lost. Doggy health insurance is also a good idea to ensure that you are not hit with any massive bills in the event their health fails.

You can tell if anything is wrong with your dog just by looking at their coat. One of the main reasons why this will go dull is if they are not getting the right diet. Poodles, whether they are home dogs or working dogs, need protein, carbohydrates, and fibre as part of a healthy and balanced diet. You can also supplement their diet with doggy treats that contain vitamins and minerals. Health diet is especially important if your dog is a working dog.

Their Coat

While you might think that poodles always look like manicured fluff balls, the reality is that it takes a lot of work to keep them in good shape. If your poodle is a working dog, then it is important to keep its coat at a length which will allow it to be waterproofed. If you cut it too short, the dog will be robbed of this ability. On the other hand, if you leave it too long, the coat will become matted which can restrict the dog’s movement and become painful, leading to the inevitable shave which will take some weeks to grow back. Prevention and maintenance are crucial to a healthy and happy functioning poodle.
